We caught up with Katy to chat about her music, those prestigious nominations as well as the best and worst parts about making music in LA.
For those who haven’t heard your music before, how do you describe your sound?
My sound is a vibrant mix of Pop, Alternative, Americana, and Reggae. Growing up, I listened to a wide array of genres, and I started playing guitar at the age of 8. This early start allowed me to explore and incorporate influences from hip-hop, blues, jazz, and soul into my music. The result is a unique sound that reflects my eclectic taste and passion for storytelling through music.
“I’ve found that staying true to my unique sound and embracing my diverse influences has helped me carve out a niche in this dynamic environment.”
You’re an Australian based in Los Angeles, what are the pros and cons of being an Aussie making music in what is arguably the music capital of the world?
Being an Aussie in Los Angeles offers a unique blend of opportunities and challenges. On the positive side, LA is a melting pot of cultures and musical influences, which provides endless inspiration and collaboration opportunities with talented artists from around the globe. The city's vibrant music scene and industry connections can open doors for placements in TV, film, and commercials, aligning perfectly with my career goals. But there are also many venues to perform.
However, there are challenges too. The competitive nature of LA's music industry can be daunting, and it requires persistence and resilience to stand out. Additionally, being far from home can be tough, as I miss the familiar comforts of Australia and the support of my local network. Despite these challenges, I've found that staying true to my unique sound and embracing my diverse influences has helped me carve out a niche in this dynamic environment.
Your new album ‘Skin Deep’ has been nominated for a Hollywood Independent Music Award in the Alternative category, how did you celebrate this massive achievement?
Having my song 'Lying Through Your Teeth' nominated for the Hollywood Independent Music Awards and being nominated in four categories at the World Entertainment Awards was an incredible honour. Winning Best Americana Song for 'Grab The Wheel' added to the excitement, and being asked to perform 'Superhero' at the awards ceremony on January 31st was truly a highlight of my career. To celebrate these massive achievements, I went to my favourite restaurant in Studio City. The night was made even more special by receiving an invite to the Grammy's After After Party, where I had the chance to celebrate with fellow artists and industry professionals. It was an unforgettable experience that has fueled my passion to continue creating and sharing my music.
The album’s focus track ‘Superhero’ is also up for the Best Pop Song Award at the World Entertainment Awards, another huge achievement. What inspired the writing of the track?
‘Superhero' was inspired by the everyday heroes we encounter in our lives—those who make a difference through small acts of kindness and courage. I wanted to create an anthem that celebrates the power within each of us to enact positive change and recognise the heroism in our daily actions. The song's empowering message is about embracing our inner strength and resilience, reminding listeners that we all have the potential to be heroes in our own right.
In addition to these themes, I was also inspired by my experiences travelling from Comic-Con to Comic-Con over a year and a half. During this time, I was also recording the album in Nashville, and the vibrant, creative energy of these events played a significant role in shaping the song. To further bring this message to life, I wrote a comic book titled 'You're My Superhero,' beautifully illustrated by Well-Bee, a talented artist from Marvel and DC. The album cover art for 'Skin Deep' was created by another phenomenal comic book artist, Steve Rude. Both the song and the comic aim to inspire and uplift, celebrating the courage and heroism we all possess.
“People often tell me how catchy it is and that it gets stuck in their heads, which is a pretty good problem to have!”
Why do you think ‘Superhero’ was nominated? What makes this song stand out over the millions of songs that were written last year?
Superhero' is really just a fun, happy pop anthem with a great message. It's all about those everyday heroes doing small acts of kindness and showing courage. If you're into comic books or love Marvel and DC films, it's a track you'll likely enjoy. People often tell me how catchy it is and that it gets stuck in their heads, which is a pretty good problem to have! The song's got this vibe that sticks with you, and that's probably why it got nominated, which I’m so grateful for. It was also so fun to perform it live at the awards ceremony in Beverly Hills
Is there a particular line or part of the song stands out for you?
The bridge of 'Superhero' holds a special place for me with the lyrics, 'Where do we go for something more, It's time to end the civil war.' It's a call for unity and peace, reflecting a desire to move beyond division and embrace a more harmonious future. While the song honours those who fight for justice, the bridge serves as a reminder that true heroism lies in seeking peace and understanding. It's a powerful moment in the song that I hope resonates with listeners and inspires them to reflect on the importance of coming together.
“There’s nothing quite like playing music in the place where it all began for me”
Are there any plans to return home to perform anytime soon?
I've actually just spent nearly two months in Australia over Christmas to catch up with family, which was wonderful. I'm definitely hoping to head back again soon, and it would be awesome to have some gigs lined up while I'm there. Growing up on Sydney's Northern Beaches, it's always a joy to return and perform for the local crowd. There's nothing quite like playing music in the place where it all began for me.
Where was your first gig? Was it a success or flop?
My first gig was when I was just 10 or 11 years old, performing an original song in front of 1,500 people at the State Rock Eisteddfod. I also did a cover song, and it was an incredible experience. I got a standing ovation, and that moment was a huge turning point for me. It was when I realized, 'I want to do this forever.' The energy and connection with the audience were unforgettable, and it really set the stage for my music career.
“The highlight of my career so far has definitely been performing ‘Superhero’ live at the World Entertainment Awards in Beverly Hills during Grammy’s weekend.”
What’s been the highlight in your career so far personally? And why?
The highlight of my career so far has definitely been performing 'Superhero' live at the World Entertainment Awards in Beverly Hills during Grammy's weekend. It was an incredible experience to share the stage and my music with such an esteemed audience. Following the performance, attending the Grammy's After After Party was just the cherry on top. Having people come up to me and express how much they love 'Superhero' and my music was such an honour. It was a surreal moment that reinforced my passion for creating music and connecting with people through it.
What advice would give a fellow artist wanting to follow your path?
If you're looking to follow a similar path, I'd say just go for it and 'Do it afraid.' which is a motto I live by. If something scares you but excites you, that's your cue to dive in. Trust your instincts and stay true to your unique sound. Don't worry too much about what others think—you're the artist, and you know your music best. Surround yourself with supportive people who get your vision, and don't be afraid to collaborate. It's a wild ride with ups and downs, but if you keep your passion alive and enjoy the journey, it's all worth it. Just keep pushing forward and let your creativity shine!
“increasing the quota for Australian music could help highlight the diverse and ever-expanding talent pool we have in the country. It’s all about giving artists the opportunity to shine and share their unique sounds with the world.”
The name Katy Tunbridge is not widely known in Australia, regardless of the international success you are achieving, so do you think the 25% minimum quota of Australian music on our radio stations is a fair number given the ever-expanding talent pool we have in this country? Would you like to see that number increased or even a dedicated Aussie station?
Yeah, I definitely think it'd be great to have even more support for up-and-coming artists on mainstream radio stations. There's so much talent out there that doesn't always get the chance to be heard, so having a dedicated Aussie station would be awesome. It would really give emerging artists a platform to showcase their music and connect with listeners. Plus, increasing the quota for Australian music could help highlight the diverse and ever-expanding talent pool we have in the country. It's all about giving artists the opportunity to shine and share their unique sounds with the world.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
Honestly, juggling everything on my own has been quite an adventure. I've always had the unwavering support of my mum, which has been incredible. Recently, I took a big step and hired a PR company, and they've been doing an amazing job getting my music out there. It's been really exciting to see the hard work paying off, especially now that I'm starting to get international radio play. It's such a thrill to know that my music is reaching new audiences around the world, and I'm grateful for the team that's helping me make it happen.
What's next for you? What can fans look forward to in 2025?
Looking ahead to 2025, there's a lot in the works that I'm really excited about! I'm planning a possible tour, and I'm on the lookout for a backer to help make it happen. Touring would be an amazing opportunity to connect with fans in person and share my music live. Besides that, I'm also diving into writing new music and collaborating with some really exciting people. It's going to be a year full of creativity and new projects, and I can't wait to share it all with you!
